Montoro

Montoro: a municipality born from fusion

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Montoro, a municipality in the province of Avellino, in Campania. Montoro is a scattered municipality with around 19,000 inhabitants, established in 2013 from the fusion of Montoro Inferiore and Montoro Superiore.

Physical geography

There is not a single location called Montoro: in fact, the municipality is formed by the hamlets of Aterrana, Banzano, Chiusa, Caliano, San Pietro, Sant'Eustachio, Torchiati, Borgo, Figlioli, Misciano, Piano, Piazza di Pandola, Preturo, San Felice and San Bartolomeo. The hamlets of Aterrana, Banzano, Chiusa, Caliano, San Pietro, Sant'Eustachio and Torchiati were part of Montoro Superiore, while Borgo, Figlioli, Misciano, Piano, Piazza di Pandola, Preturo, San Felice and San Bartolomeo belonged to Montoro Inferiore. The municipal seat is located in the hamlet of Piano, in Piazza Michele Pironti.

The municipal territory is crossed by the Solofrana stream, a tributary of the Sarno river, which is unfortunately very polluted due to the industrial waste of Solofra.

The fusion of the two municipalities was subject to a referendum in 2009 and then again in 2013, when the majority of voters expressed approval for the merger. The municipality of Montoro was established on December 3, 2013, with Regional Law No. 16 of November 11, 2013.

Symbols and honors

The coat of arms and the flag of the City of Montoro were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on November 30, 2015. The flag is a yellow cloth with a blue border.
