History
The territory of Montorio was the subject of numerous battles during the second Punic War in the 3rd century BC, in which Fabius Maximus and Hannibal faced each other. After the fall of the Roman Empire, populations sought refuge in the territory, where the current town was born. Around the castle and the already existing church, which were part of the defense system studied by Vito Avalerio and the De Molisio, both Norman counts, the first houses were built. Montorio became part of the County of Molise and was a fiefdom of the De Molisio until the 13th century.

Among the monuments of the municipality, the Church of the Assumption stands out, built as a Norman church but founded again in 1738. After the earthquake of 1656, which had reduced the three naves to one, the church was rebuilt with three naves, in a basilica style. The facade of the church is sober and is composed of a portal with a classic frame, flanked by a powerful bell tower. Inside, the church is decorated with a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin, a reliquary with the relics of Saint Costanzo, an altar with the painting of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, and above all the painting of Teodoro D'Errico depicting the Annunciation of the angel Gabriel to Mary. Another place of interest is the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine, a small 19th century neoclassical church with a single nave, with a simple facade with a central window and a sail bell tower. The noble Magliano Palace, originally perhaps the castle, was completed after the reconstruction of the 17th century earthquake. This powerful structure has a skirting masonry, a rectangular plan, and an entrance marked by a portal with two Doric columns. Finally, we find the urban gate, the only medieval element of the center, built in the 13th century with a pointed arch.
