A bit of history

Monticello Brianza has a very ancient history, dating back to 903, when it was part of a series of fiefs granted by the Chapter of the Monza Cathedral. In 1762, the municipality of Monticello ed Uniti included only four of the currently present localities and later became an autonomous municipality in 1880, when Casirago was incorporated. Many churches and villas date back to this historical period and add beauty to the city.

Religious architecture

Monticello Brianza is famous for its numerous churches, including the Parish Church of Sant'Agata, which was built in 1876 according to the design of Tagliasecchi to replace a previous church. Inside, this church features a Crucifixion and some lithographs by Aligi Sassu. There is also the Parish Church of Santa Maria della Purificazione, built in Torrevilla in 1774 to replace a previous Catholic place of worship. In addition, there are the Parish Church of the Most Holy Redeemer in Cortenuova, the Oratory of Santa Maria Assunta, and the Oratory of San Gerolamo.

Civil architecture

Monticello Brianza is also famous for its beautiful villas and farms. The complex of Villa Nava Rusconi was built in 1820, commissioned by Luigi Canonica for the Nava family. Over time, the villa has changed hands several times, passing from the Nava to the Rusca, from the Rusca to the Radici-Fossati, and then again to the Rusca. On the idea of Ambrogio Nava, the perimeter gates of the property feature a series of pillars adorned with busts representing great personalities of the time such as Albertolli, Appiani, Luigi Cagnola, Alessandro Manzoni, Monti, Oriani, Gian Domenico Romagnosi, and Alessandro Volta. In addition, there are other villas such as Villa Greppi, Villa Bocconi (now used as a nursing home), Villa Albertini, Villa Borla, and Villa Pedrazzini. There are also three farms: Cascina Canova, Cascina Magritto, and Cascina Masè.

Society

Monticello Brianza has a population of 4087 inhabitants. The city has seen a demographic increase throughout its history, from 189 inhabitants in 1751 to 2330 inhabitants in 1881. Today, foreigners residing in the city are 367 and constitute 8.9% of the population.
