The Montesegale Castle: the story of a medieval fortification
Hello everyone! Today I will talk about the Montesegale Castle, a wonderful medieval fortress located in the homonymous municipality in the province of Pavia.
History
The Montesegale Castle has very ancient origins, probably dating back to the 11th century. Over the centuries it has undergone numerous changes of ownership, passing from the palatine counts of Lomello to the Gambarana family. In 1415 the castle was destroyed by Carmagnola and later, in 1646, it passed under the ownership of Count Gerolamo Gambarana. Today the castle belongs to the Jannuzzelli family.
Structure
The Montesegale Castle has a very complex structure, composed of courtyards and buildings from different eras. The fortified wall is equipped with square-based towers and Ghibelline battlements. In the upper part of the castle there is a large bastioned earthwork, where a small fortress and a tower stand, which are considered by historians to be the original part of the fortress.
