Physical Geography

History
Origins
The territory of Montescudo-Monte Colombo has a rich history dating back to the Roman Republic. Villas were already built on the banks of the Conca River in the 2nd century BC, with functional facilities for agricultural activities. During the Byzantine Empire, settlements in the territory were scattered in terms of urban planning.
From the Middle Ages to Modern times
During the Middle Ages, Montescudo (then called "Montescuotolo") was donated to the Counts of Carpegna by Emperor Otto I of Saxony in 962. In the 13th-15th century, the territory was contested between the Malatesta and the Montefeltro, leading to the construction of numerous castles and defensive towers.
In the 16th century, Montescudo-Monte Colombo fell first under the dominion of Cesare Borgia and then under the Republic of Venice, before returning under the Papal State between 1509 and 1510. In 1722, a landslide destroyed half of Montescudo.
Contemporary age
During the Italian Campaign (1796-1797), General Napoleon Bonaparte received the homage of a delegation of Montescudo inhabitants.
