The history of Quercegrossa

The village of Quercegrossa has undergone many vicissitudes in its history. The oldest citation of this reality dates back to 1111: at the beginning of the 13th century, in fact, it played an important role in the defensive line of the Republic of Siena, when it was in conflict with the Republic of Florence. It was destroyed by the Florentines during the war of 1232 and immediately rebuilt as a stronghold of the Sienese borders. Today the village is divided into three parts: the original village, called "Quercia"; the more modern part, and the largest, which develops towards Siena; and Il Mulino di Quercegrossa, which is about 2 km from the hamlet towards Florence. The latter has become an agriturismo with a large outdoor swimming pool, also open to non-guests.

Monuments and places of interest in Quercegrossa

Despite being a small village, Quercegrossa has several monuments of interest. Among the religious architecture, one can admire the Church of Saints Giacomo and Niccolò, dating back to the 13th century and still used for religious functions, and the Church of Santa Maria, of which, however, there is no trace. A plaque dedicated to the fallen of the First and Second World War is also located in the hamlet. The panorama that can be seen from the original village of "Quercia" is a beautiful surprise. Moreover, the Church of Saints Giacomo and Niccolò overlooks directly the road to Siena and is easily reachable on foot.

The economy of Quercegrossa, between agriculture and services

In the territory of the hamlet, and in both municipalities to which it belongs, the renowned Chianti Classico wine, both in wine and oil version, is produced. In addition, among the services present, one cannot fail to mention the self-managed female participation toy library, which represents a very important project for the country.
