In the next section, we'll look at the history of Montemurro.

History of Montemurro

Montemurro was founded around the end of the 1000s, following the Saracen raids suffered by Grumentum. Over the centuries, it belonged to the episcopal seat of Tricarico and was ruled by the Sanseverino and Carafa families.

In more recent times, Montemurro was the site of the "Lucanian insurrection" phenomena. Giacinto Albini, son of Montemurro and famous for his anti-Bourbon rebellion, allowed Giuseppe Garibaldi to liberate Basilicata.

However, the town was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1857, which hit the entire region and led to the delayed Lucanian uprising, as well as the transfer of the "operational base" to Corleto Perticara.

Montemurro also suffered damage due to a large landslide that hit the upper part of the town. The Palazzo Robilotta, one of the few buildings left standing after the earthquake of 1857, was able to contain much of the landslide.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Montemurro is a small town that has had to face numerous negative events. However, its history teaches us that the resilience of its inhabitants can withstand adversity. Today, Montemurro is renowned for the beauty of its geography and local architecture, and offers a welcoming atmosphere to anyone who visits.
