In the Middle Ages, the municipality was home to castles, while in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the castle of the capital was the "Vicariate" of the famous Malatesta and Piccolomini families, feudal lords on behalf of the Papal State. After the two-year period 1591-1593, the village returned under the direct control of the State of the Church, entrusted to the Apostolic Camera until its annexation to the Kingdom of Italy.
