Montemale di Cuneo

Welcome to Montemale di Cuneo!

Hello everyone, today I want to talk to you about Montemale di Cuneo, a beautiful mountain resort in Piedmont. With its 228 inhabitants, Montemale is a small village located 961 meters above sea level and surrounded by the Maira and Grana valleys. The village is dominated by an ancient castle that was rebuilt in 1936 after centuries of abandonment.

A dive into Montemale di Cuneo's history

Montemale di Cuneo has an ancient and fascinating history. The village dates back to 1098 when Rodolfo, lord of the place, donated some possessions to the monastery of Savigliano. In 1170, the Montemales became vassals of the Marquisate of Saluzzo, and over the centuries, they also expanded to Vottignasco and part of the city of Saluzzo, where they lived for a long period. However, the Montemales had to leave their fief and move to Cuneo because of a wrong alliance with the lord of Cardè, Manfredo. During World War II, the castle of Montemale was used as a center for the detention of Yugoslav army officers, taken prisoner by the Royal Army during the invasion of Yugoslavia.
