Montelparo

Montelparo: a small town on the Marche hills

Hello everyone! Today I'm talking about a small town located in the province of Fermo, in the beautiful region of Marche: Montelparo. With its only 722 inhabitants, Montelparo is a true treasure located on top of a hill between the Sibillini Mountains and the Adriatic Sea.

Physical geography

Montelparo is an ancient village located 538 meters above sea level. Its name seems to derive from that of Elprando or Eliprando, a Longobard commander who built a castle with a first wall in the VII century and the XI century. It is in an excellent panoramic position, from which you can admire the Aso valley.

History

Montelparo has a very ancient history. Historical remains show that the area was inhabited since the 8th century BC by Picene populations, followed by the remains of a Roman necropolis in Celestrana. In the XIII century, the village became a Comune of Guelphs and Ghibellines and experienced a remarkable development with the construction of three monasteries (Benedictine, Augustinian and Franciscan) and a third wall that dates back to the XV–XVIII centuries. Throughout the centuries, Montelparo had moments of prosperity but also moments of difficulty. However, its artistic and cultural heritage remains unique and of great value.

Monuments and places of interest

The historic center of Montelparo is a real treasure. Its evolution can be observed on the three walls with four doors each. Among the main monuments are the church of San Michele Arcangelo (XIII century), the church of Santa Maria Novella (XIII century), the church of San Pietro (1286), the Porta del Sole (XIII century), Palazzo Petrocchini (XIV century), the Civic Tower (XIV century), the church of Sant'Antonio di Padova (XV century), the wheat mountain (1511), the church of Santa Maria in Camurano (1549), the church of San Gregorio Magno (1615), the convent (1686) and the church (1730) of Sant'Agostino and the Town Hall (XVIII century). Also noteworthy is the museum of sacred objects in the convent of Sant'Agostino and the exhibition of itinerant trades on bicycles at the Augustinian Cloister.

Society

The demographic evolution of the Municipality of Montelparo has always been very contained, but its beauty and cultural heritage continue to attract visitors from all over Italy and the world.
