History of Montelibretti: from the Romans to the present day

The history of Montelibretti dates back to the Roman era and was the residence of Gaio Bruzio Presente, the father-in-law of Emperor Commodus. In 1018, the Bruzia gens farm became known as "Castellum Britti", and during the twelfth century, it was mentioned as "Montis Brittorum" or "De Brectis".

In the fourteenth century, the village passed to the Orsini family and later to the Barberini family, and finally to the Colonna family. In the seventeenth century, the shepherds from Monti Reatini and Lucretili settled about 1 km north of the village, founding Montelibretti "Casali". In 1867, the city was the scene of the Campaign of the Roman Agro, during which the State troops of the Church and the French clashed against Giuseppe Garibaldi. Today, memories of this battle can be appreciated in the National Museum of the Roman Agro campaign for the Liberation of Rome, located in the municipality of Mentana.
