The History of Monteleone Rocca Doria
Monteleone Rocca Doria has a rich ancient history. In Nuragic times, the area was inhabited thanks to the presence of some Nuraghi, while in the Middle Ages a castle and a village belonging to the Doria family were built in the 14th century. In 1436, the castle was occupied by the Aragonese after a three-year siege and dismantled by the Aragonese King Alfonso V of Aragon. The village was also destroyed, but the inhabitants took refuge in part in the nearby town of Monteleone (later known as Villanova Monteleone), and partly remained to rebuild the town. The municipality became part of the county of Monteleone which was redeemed in 1839 from the Brunengo, the last feudal lords, with the abolition of the feudal system.
