Origin and history of the name
The etymology of the name Montelanico would derive from the name "Metellus" plus the suffix "-anicus," presumably referring to the Metelli Roman family who owned a property in the area. Another interpretation suggests that the name may come from a legend that a shepherd had accumulated so much wool that it formed a "mountain of wool." In the years 1860-1870, Montelanico was involved in the brigandage actions that occurred in Lazio, known as the Post-Unitarian Banditry in the Papal State.
