History
Origins of the territory
Five million years ago, the area where Montegrosso d'Asti stands today was a shallow sea. Subsequently, the accumulation of sediments formed numerous hills. Two to three million years ago, the territory was a vast plain dotted with lakes and marshes. Here lived animals like rhinos, elephants, and cheetahs. One million and eight hundred thousand years ago, the Ice Age began, and the biotic environment underwent significant changes due to the harsher climate.
The Late Middle Ages
According to local tradition, Montegrosso d'Asti was founded in 1134 when the survivors of a plague settled on the hill of the current town to escape the epidemic. However, the actual foundation took place in 1198 when the City of Asti granted citizenship to the inhabitants of some villages in the area, including Messadio, Caprarolio, and Vigliano d'Asti. Montegrosso soon became an important village, and in 1205, it was built. In 1207, the Church of San Secondo was also erected.
Between Guelphs and Ghibellines
In the 14th century, the city suffered the consequences of the civil wars between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. Montegrosso became a demesne village and was heavily involved in the conflicts. However, the city managed to maintain its independence and remain under the direct dominion of Asti.
