Montegiordano

Welcome to the Municipality of Montegiordano! We are happy to describe the history, symbols, and points of interest of our small Italian town, which has only 1567 inhabitants.

History

Montegiordano has a millennial history, dating back to the 4th century BC with traces of Hellenistic-Roman settlements. However, the community has even older origins and lived in the Mandrone district, 3 km from the sea, until the attacks of Turkish pirates forced them to abandon the area. In 1649, the Marquis of Oriolo granted them the land of Calopardo where they rebuilt the village called Montegiordano as it is known today. The community was inspired by the name of the original area, to which they added the name Giordano in honor of a priest with the same name.

Symbols

The coat of arms and flag of the Municipality of Montegiordano were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on January 23, 1984. The flag is a blue standard.

Montegiordano: history, symbols and places of interest.

Monuments and points of interest

The castle of Montegiordano is located above the Marina, built by the Pignone del Carretto as a winter and hunting residence. The original castle was destroyed by Turkish raids, but the marquis decided to rebuild the structure in the 17th century.

Montegiordano has two inhabited centers: Montegiordano Centro and the Frazione Marina. The Marina is located on the Ionian coast at only 20 meters above sea level and is characterized by a crystal clear sea. The Frazione Marina is divided into three beaches, the main beach, Marina di Montegiordano, Acquabianca beach, and Mirto beach.

Conclusion

Our town is rich in history and culture, with a heritage of monuments and points of interest to visit, as well as the beautiful beaches of the Frazione Marina. We invite you to visit Montegiordano, taste traditional Calabrian cuisine, and embrace the hospitality of its inhabitants with joy.
