Montegiove

Welcome to Montegiove

Hello everyone, today I will talk to you about Montegiove, a beautiful hamlet located in the municipality of Montegabbione, in the province of Terni.

History

Montegiove was an autonomous municipality until 1869, when it was merged with the municipality of Montegabbione. Its etymology derives from "Jupiter Elicius", meaning the god Jupiter who descends in lightning.

The most important and historic building in Montegiove is the Castle of Montegiove, built on top of the hill at 627 meters above sea level. According to some historians, the castle was built on top of an ancient temple where two marble heads of the god Jupiter were found. Although the exact year of the castle's construction is uncertain, it is known that in 1282 a request was made for the construction of an oratory inside the estate of the Castle, which was then granted.

Over the centuries, the ownership of the castle passed through different hands, becoming the residence of Beata Angelina, the Monadelschi della Vipera and the condottiero Gattamelate. Since 1780 it has belonged to the Misciattelli marquises, who have united the ancient fiefdom and the castle's property into an estate of 1200 hectares. At the end of the nineteenth century, the property passed to the marquis Lorenzo Misciattelli who, with a renovation work, transformed the castle into a twentieth-century residence.
