History

Later, at the end of the 6th century AD, the inhabitants of Atripalda took refuge here after the destruction of their inhabited center. In the twelfth century, Montefredane was mentioned in the Catalogus baronum (1150-1168) as part of the county of Avellino. During the following centuries, the municipality changed its name and was governed by several noble families, including the De Tufo, Capece, Brancaccio, and Orsini. In the seventeenth century, a terrible plague epidemic drastically reduced the population. Finally, in the nineteenth century, the territory was purchased by the Caracciolo family, who brought it back to new splendor with the construction of the Castle. Today, Montefredane is a peaceful municipality with a rich historical heritage.
