Case del Conte

Discovering Case del Conte, the village of Montecorice

Case del Conte is a village in Montecorice, Salerno province, located in the north-central Cilento region, close to the Tyrrhenian Sea coast. The town is bounded by Castellabate and the Rio dell'Arena stream and is near the hamlet of Ogliastro Marina, while the hilly border is home to the hamlet of Giungatelle di Perdifumo.

Characteristics

The village, with a population of about 235, is situated along the SS 267 of Cilento road, from the area called "Pietà" (at the crossroads for Ogliastro), and continues on a series of curves to the Tyrrhenian Sea coast, near the hills. The locality is surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation and has a long and wide beach shared with nearby Ogliastro Marina, and a Bourbon tower in the center. The road leading to the beach has seen recent urbanization, contiguous to that of the "Arena" district of Ogliastro, consisting mainly of second homes for tourism. Along the provincial road leading to Perdifumo and Castellabate, there are small internal hamlets of Mainolfi and Giungatelle.

Redevelopment Works

Since 2014, redevelopment works have been underway in the village. The works have involved urban furniture and water purification in the Arena Bay, bordering Ogliastro Marina.

Village History

The name of Case del Conte refers to the Conte Matarazzo, ancient landowners of the area, and was initially called "casino del conte" as it corresponded to an agricultural area. In 1909 the name was changed to "case del Conte". The large house that represented the heart of the village still exists and is over three hundred years old.
