Agnone
Discovering Agnone Cilento, the hamlet of Montecorice
Hello everyone! Today I will be talking about Agnone Cilento, a hamlet in the province of Salerno with around 1000 inhabitants located on the Tyrrhenian coast.
Its geographical location
The location of Agnone Cilento makes it very suggestive as it is located at the mouth of the Rio Lavis, along the route of the 267 Cilento state road. Moreover, it is only 3 kilometers away from the center of Montecorice. As peripheral hamlets, instead, we find S. Nicola a Mare, S. Nicola dei Lembo, Rosaine, Ripe Rosse, Magazzeni, Guarino, Capitello and Punta Capitello.
The history of Agnone Cilento
Let's move on to history. Before the 17th century, Agnone Cilento was a small unexplored territory. In 1187 there was a church called Santa Maria de Hercula, and only from the 17th century onwards did the development of the actual locality begin, including the hamlet of S.Nicola a Mare, initially a small nucleus of fishermen's houses.
Speaking of traditions, marinated anchovies and "libbani" are some of the specialties of this place. Furthermore, among the most numerous families of Agnone Cilento we find Margarucci, Lembo, Maffia, Malzone and Guariglia. The best-known neighborhoods are "a Marina", the square, "via vecchia" via Lavis, the warehouses, the "melaro" and the Lumbro.
The economy of Agnone Cilento
Let's move on to the economic part. Agnone Cilento is a very famous tourist resort in the Cilento, and is located within the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. Another hamlet of Montecorice that you could visit is Case del Conte, about six kilometers from the center of Agnone Cilento. In recent years, completion works have been carried out on the port and soon a pedestrian connection will be made between San Nicola and Agnone.
Transportation
As for transportation, the main connection with Salerno and Naples is represented by scheduled bus services. Furthermore, in the hamlet of S. Nicola a Mare, only 500 meters from Agnone, there is a functioning port, undergoing completion and finishing works, where a pedestrian connection will be built with Agnone.
Conclusions
In general, Agnone Cilento represents a lovely place to visit, especially during the summer season. The crystal-clear waters, the history and the surrounding nature make it an ideal destination for a break from everyday life. Finally, as you can read in the "Related Voices" section, Agnone Cilento is part of the Cilento Coast, one of the most beautiful in Italy, and of the Alento-Monte Stella Mountain Community.
