Monticelli Terme

Welcome to Monticelli Terme: An Overview of the City

Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Monticelli Terme, a charming town in the province of Parma, with a population of about 4800 inhabitants and is home to one of the five suburban councils of the polycentric municipality of Montechiarugolo.

The city is located on the edge of the first hilly foothills of the Parma plain, on the left bank of the Enza stream; the large modern center is located in an almost flat position, while the original medieval village of Monticelli with the Church of San Donnino and the castle disappeared at the end of the fifteenth century is located on the hills to the south.

The climate of Monticelli Terme is typically continental. Temperatures range from average highs of 28.9 degrees Celsius in July to average lows of -1.4 degrees Celsius in January. Rainfall varies significantly: in July, an average of 45 mm of rain falls, while in November, 100 mm falls.

A Brief History

Monticelli Terme has an ancient and rich history. Human settlements in the area arose during the Bronze Age and the Etruscans founded a new settlement on the ancient remains. The area was also inhabited in Roman times, as demonstrated by the subdivision of the territory that still follows the ancient centuriazione and the place names of some places of certain Latin origin.

A new village was founded in the Middle Ages, in a more southern area of the ancient Etruscan village. By the tenth century, there was also a castle of Monticelli, first mentioned in 980 in the confirmation of its possession to the bishop of Parma Oberto and the canons of the Cathedral Chapter of Parma by the Holy Roman Emperor Otto II of Saxony.

Monticelli followed the fate of the city of Parma. In 1303, Giberto III da Correggio took power and was later ousted in 1316. In 1335, the lord of Verona Mastino II della Scala took possession of the city, but in 1341 Azzo da Correggio reconquered it. The latter sold it to the Marquis of Ferrara Obizzo III d'Este in 1344 and the latter finally sold it to the lord of Milan Luchino Visconti in 1346.

In 1402, after the death of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Ottobuono de 'Terzi took possession of Parma, removing the Rossi of Parma, who in reaction began to carry out a series of raids throughout the area. Monticelli was plundered in 1403 and again in 1404.
