History
The first settlements date back to the 7th century, when the so-called "Pieve del Cauro" was built under the influence of the abbey of San Quintino di Spigno Monferrato. In the 11th-13th century, with the increase of traffic towards the sea and the need for greater defense, the current medieval village of Montechiaro Alto was built. Over the centuries, the town came under the control of different noble families, including the Del Carretto di Bossolasco, the Scarampi di Cairo Montenotte, the Marchesi di Canelli, the Scarampi-Crivello, the Cavoretti di Belvedere and the Gianazzo di Pamparato.
During World War II, the municipality was the scene of partisan activities against the German troops and the Italian Social Republic. After the war, Montechiaro became the adopted home of important artists of the 20th century, such as Eso Peluzzi and Alberto Caffassi.

The coat of arms and the flag of the municipality of Montechiaro d'Acqui were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on March 31, 1983. The flag is a yellow and red split banner.
