Welcome to Poggio Bustone: a bit of history, geography, and climate

Hello everyone, today I will talk to you about Poggio Bustone, a municipality located in the province of Rieti in Lazio. This town is known for different reasons: the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone, founded by Francis of Assisi, the production of porchetta, and because Lucio Battisti and Attilio Piccioni were born here.

Poggio Bustone is located on the hill of Monte Rosato, about 350 meters above the valley, at the foot of the massif of Monte Terminillo. This position means that the climate is classified as zone E with 2741 GR/G. The presence of four Franciscan sanctuaries in the area also makes it known as the "Holy Valley."

Origins of the name and history

The name Poggio Bustone comes from the Latin "podium" and the name "Busto," present during the medieval period. The first document attesting to the existence of this municipality dates back to the twelfth century.

In 1117, the Lord of the fief Berardo Berardi donated the territory to the Abbey of Farfa, but the power of the abbey was short-lived, and the town passed under Norman dominion. At the end of the twelfth century, Poggio Bustone was included in the Reatine territory.

Saint Francis and his six companions settled in Poggio Bustone in 1208 to preach in the Reatine Valley. The earthquake of Reatino in 1298 completely destroyed the town and caused the death of 150 inhabitants.

From 1817, Poggio Bustone became the seat of a governorate that had under its dependence the municipalities of Labro, Morro Reatino, and Rivodutri, in the Pontifical State, bordering the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. During World War II, the city was invaded by Nazi-fascist troops, but thanks to the courage of the population, Poggio Bustone was awarded the Silver Medal for Military Valor.

Monuments and places of interest

The old town of Poggio Bustone is characterized by narrow and rustic streets, staircases that become mountain trails and the medieval structure of the historic center. The Parish of San Giovanni Battista is the main church in the area.

The porchetta of Poggio Bustone

The porchetta of Poggio Bustone is famous throughout Italy. This dish is prepared with a rolled pig, stuffed with herbs and spices. The porchetta is then cooked for a long time in the oven. The result is a tasty and tender roast, perfect to be consumed as a main course or in stuffed sandwiches.

Conclusions

In summary, Poggio Bustone is a charming town that, despite the destruction caused by the earthquake of 1298 and the war events of World War II, has managed to preserve its medieval charm. Its natural beauties, such as Monte Rosato and Monte Terminillo, together with the production of porchetta, make Poggio Bustone an unmissable destination for those who love history, gastronomic culture, and nature.
