Corvara in Badia is a small municipality with 1367 inhabitants located in the autonomous province of Bolzano in Trentino-Alto Adige. This mountain location is the largest center in the Badia Valley, situated in the heart of the Dolomites. Thanks to its privileged position, Corvara in Badia has become a renowned ski resort in the Puez Group of the Sella Ronda, at the foot of Sassongher and the Dolomiti Superski area.

Toponymy History

The name of this municipality has ancient origins and derives from the Latin "corvus", meaning "crow". The addition of the suffix "-aria" gave the meaning of "place of crows". The toponym has undergone several changes in its writing, from the original "Kurfaer" of 1296 to the current "Corvara in Badia". Between 1925 and 1938, the municipality changed its name to "Ladinia", to group the municipalities of Corvara and Colfosco.

Municipality History

Although Corvara and Colfosco now belong to the same municipality, they have had very different histories and belonged to different territories. Corvara has a documented history dating back to 1292, while Colfosco was first mentioned in 1153. Corvara was part of the Marebbe jurisdiction, while Colfosco was part of the Selva di Val Gardena. Both locations were part of the Brunico district until the end of World War I. The oldest church in Corvara, dedicated to Santa Caterina, dates back to the 15th century, while the one dedicated to the Sacred Heart was built in 1962.

Tourism

Corvara and Colfosco became known worldwide in the 19th century when they were discovered as ideal destinations for skiing and hiking. In 1947, the first ski lift in Italy was inaugurated, connecting Corvara to Col Alto. This marked the beginning of an intensification of tourism that saw a particular increase in the 1970s, creating new jobs for the local population and visitors from other regions.
