Monte Marenzo
Monte Marenzo: history and territory
Introduction
Hello everyone! Today, I want to talk to you about the municipality of Monte Marenzo, a place rich in history and natural beauty. Located in Lombardy, in the province of Lecco, it is divided into two areas: the town center, called "San Paolo," and the Levata hamlet.
Territory
The municipality, crossed by the State Road 639 of the Lakes of Pusiano and Garlate and by the Lecco-Bergamo railway line in Levata, can count on numerous watercourses including the Carpine, Prisa, Bisone, and Premagiò streams.
History
Middle Ages
The territory of Monte Marenzo has a long history, dating back to the Roman era when it was located along a branch of the Bergamo-Como road. In the Middle Ages, during the barbarian invasions, numerous fortifications were built. In 1137, a "court" and the church of Sant'Alessandro in Turni were mentioned. One of these fortifications was on the hill of Santa Margherita and was the Cantagudo castle. The area then entered the orbit of the municipality of Bergamo, which in 1238 was in possession of the castle of Marenzo and its territory.
In 1216, the territory of Monte Marenzo also had its own parish provided by the Milanese diocese of Brivio, and at least from 1234, the church of San Paolo was its center. In 1433, the territory entered the Republic of Venice, and in 1435, the parish of San Paolo became entirely autonomous.
Symbols
The coat of arms of the municipality was granted on December 5, 1978, by decree of the President of the Republic Sandro Pertini.
Characteristics
The town center of Monte Marenzo is characterized by a strong residential presence, while the Levata hamlet stands out for the presence of numerous artisanal and industrial activities. The two neighborhoods are connected to each other by an agricultural trail, accessible only to pedestrians, but also by provincial and state roads.
Economy
As mentioned, the Levata hamlet is home to numerous artisanal and industrial activities that constitute an important engine of the municipality's economy. Here it is possible to find businesses that are leaders in the fields of construction, mechanics, furniture, and fashion.
