A unique territory

The Argentario promontory extends into the Tyrrhenian Sea and includes two islands: the Island of Giglio and the Island of Giannutri. Argentario was also an island, but over the centuries it merged with the mainland creating the Giannella and Feniglia Tombolos, which formed the Orbetello Lagoon. The territory of Monte Argentario is hilly and characterized by the presence of olive trees and the Ansonica Costa dell'Argentario vineyard. The coast is rugged and composed of coves and rocky beaches of great beauty. In addition, Monte Argentario is part of the Sanctuary for Marine Mammals, a protected marine natural area of international interest. Within it there are also some islets, such as Isolotto, Isola Rossa and Isola Argentarola.

The Mediterranean climate

The climate of Monte Argentario is Mediterranean, with little and variable rainfall, particularly concentrated in autumn. During the summer, humidity increases significantly. The sun is always present, with an average of over 7 hours per day throughout the year. The average temperature in the coldest month, January, is 9°C, while that of the warmest month, August, is 25°C.

Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole

Porto Santo Stefano is the municipal seat and capital of Monte Argentario. It is located on the northwest coast and is the main tourist center in the area. The tourist port with the numerous ferries that connect the area with the Island of Giglio and the historic center, located on a hill with a panoramic view of the harbor waters and the bay, are characteristic. Porto Ercole, located on the southeast coast, is a fraction of Monte Argentario a short distance from Porto Santo Stefano. Porto Ercole is also an important tourist center, famous for the Spanish Fortezza, the church of Sant'Erasmo, and the Feniglia beach.
