Montazzoli

Montazzoli: a small Abruzzo town

If you want to break away from the usual routine and enjoy the unique beauty of Italy, then Montazzoli is the hidden gem that's perfect for you. Located in the province of Chieti, in central Abruzzo, this magical village of 857 inhabitants will make you forget the worries of daily life and immerse you in the peaceful beauty of the countryside.

Physical geography

Montazzoli: the hidden treasure of central Abruzzo.

Territory

The settlement sits atop two hills, Colle San Carlo to the south and Colle Ripa to the north, separated by a recently built plain where the town's more modern houses can be found. The watchtower town also hosts the castle, which, although positioned on a lower hill than Colle San Carlo, provides better coverage and protection.

Climate

The climate of Montazzoli is mild and pleasant, thanks to the numerous mountains and coasts that make it feel the embrace of the sea. The climate here is Mediterranean, with moderate winters and warm and comforting summers.

History

The founding of the town dates back to the period between the 9th and 12th centuries, during which the signal tower was built at the branch of the tratturo coming from Civita del Conte, reaching the Baroness's Farm. Later, there were manors and factories annexed to the castle. In 1270, the 'castrum' settlement was built, which included several scattered houses. In 1686, the universitas of Baselice and Civita del Conte were united.

Monuments and places of interest

The town is rich in historical and cultural treasures, such as the Franceschelli Castle, located in the highest part of the town, where you can see the architecture of the ancient gates and loopholes and the watchtowers.

The parish church of San Silvestro Papa, also of recent foundation, dates back to 1934. The church consists of two bodies and a rear bell tower, characterized by a neo-late-Romanesque Abruzzo architecture style with a baroque interior with a single nave with three niches with three statues behind the altar.

Even the Church of Sant'Antonio is not far behind, located just behind the church of San Silvestro Papa. The church, which is the patronage of the Franceschelli barony, is believed to have been built in 1700. The simple design façade ends in an arched shape and the roof has a double slope.

Finally, the interior is characterized by a baroque element with a single nave, with three niches with statues of three saints behind the altar.

In summary, Montazzoli is a small but precious gem, where the beauty of history is reflected in the tranquility of the green and lush hills. If you are looking for an authentic experience in Italy, this town is definitely worth a visit!
