The history of Montaquila

Motaquila is an ancient municipality that sits on a hill overlooking the Volturno valley. The inhabited nucleus, which has the shape of a circle, was equipped with new walls with circular towers and a castle in the 15th century, during the Aragonese era. The main church of the city, Santa Maria Assunta, was damaged by the Molise earthquake of 1805 and was destroyed after poorly placed restorations. It was rebuilt in 1888.

The symbols of Montaquila

The coat of arms and the gonfalone of Montaquila were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on September 19, 1994. The municipal gonfalone is a blue flag, richly adorned with silver embroideries and charged with the above-described coat of arms with the inscription centered in silver, bearing the name of the Municipality.

Monuments and places of interest

Montaquila is rich in monuments and places of interest that will leave you speechless.

Medieval village of Roccaravindola

The medieval village of Roccaravindola dates back to the 10th century. The castle was built around 1074 by Count Ugone of Venafro, who received the fief from Abbot Desiderio of Montecassino. The village, perched on a rocky hill, has been in decline since the 1960s due to depopulation. It is accessed through a destroyed platform, of which the Old Access Door, with a round arch, remains. The houses are linked together, in a fortified complex that covers the entire crest of the hill. Towards the outside, almost overhanging towards the ravine, there is the small, very simple church.

Parish Church of Santa Maria

The medieval church of Santa Maria was rebuilt in 1663 and then in 1888. The current form is neoclassical as far as the facade with Greek Temple lintel is concerned. The rest of the exterior is in rough stone. The interior is a single nave with baroque relics including gold jewelry.

Circular towers

Three towers of the city walls are preserved. One is divided into two levels by a frame. It has a window and merlons on the summit. A second tower has become a private chapel of the Rossi family.

Society

The population of Montaquila is mainly distributed in the municipal capital and in the fraction of Roccaravindola. The latter has been expanding in recent decades and has about 1200 inhabitants, making it the largest inhabited nucleus in the municipality.

Administration

The political guide of Montaquila is entrusted to Mayor Marciano Ricci, a member of the civic list, since June 2018.

Sports

Sports are very important in Montaquila. The city has a football team, the Polisportiva Roccaravindola 1973, which plays in the Promotion championship, and an ancient football 5-a-side team, the Roccaravindola Football 5-a-side, which played in the regional championship of series C1.

In conclusion, Montaquila is a city that preserves an invaluable cultural and natural wealth. We hope to have piqued your curiosity enough to come and visit it as soon as possible!
