Montano Lucino: The History of a Lombardy Municipality

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Montano Lucino, a municipality in the province of Como in Lombardy. With its 5,302 inhabitants, this village has a long history behind it.

Origin of the Name

The name Montano Lucino has Roman origins: "Montano" comes from "montanus" and means "mountainous", while "Lucino" could derive from "lucus", which means "sacred grove", or from the personal name "Licinio". In the past, the Lucinese territory was indicated with the toponym "Caneda".

History

According to some studies, the first Neolithic village in the comasco (3500 BC) could be located in the territory of Montano Lucino. Some pottery pieces dating back to that period were found in the area, as well as some even older Selce artifacts dating back to about 1500 years.

In the communal age, Lucino had a castle of Gallic Cisalpine origin and sided with Como against Milan. The fortress was destroyed in 1240 by the Milanese, who took possession of the castle following the betrayal of Arialdo Advocato.

The annexes to the Statutes of Como of 1335 list the municipalities of Montano and Trevino, and the municipality of Lucino among those that had the task of ensuring the maintenance of some roads. In 1751, the municipality of Montano already had jurisdiction over the hamlets of Vetello, Grisono, Grignola, Lucivosco, Cantalupo, Trivino, and Dasso, while the municipality of Lucino had jurisdiction over those of "Lucino al Monte", Arcisà, "Cassina La Cà" and "Cimiee".

In 1807, Montano was merged into Gironico, while Lucino was incorporated into Como.
