The history of Montallegro
Once upon a time, Montallegro was located on a mountain called Monte Suso, where the remains of the village can still be seen today. In the past, the village was strategically located, as it was far from raiding parties coming from the sea. Towers were built to signal with fires to warn the population in case of danger. In the seventeenth century, the old site was abandoned, but the ruins can still be seen today. In 1610 Montallegro was a fiefdom of Nicolò Montaperto, who had to sell it due to debts contracted in 1619 to the Prince of Castiglione. Later, the fiefdom was acquired by the Gioeni family of the princes of Petrulla, and the village was founded before 1630 by one of their descendants, who obtained the privilege of claiming the title of Duke of Angiò.
