History

Foundation and transformation into a Roman colony

Turin's history dates back two thousand years, when the Taurini founded the city around the 3rd century BC. The Romans transformed it into a colony called ''Iulia Augusta Taurinorum'' in the 1st century BC.

Turin under various lordships

After the rule of the Ostrogoths, Turin became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin in the Middle Ages. In 1563, it became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. From 1720 it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (until 1861), which led to the Risorgimento and the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
