Montaldo Torinese
Montaldo Torinese: let's discover this Piedmontese town together!
Montaldo Torinese is a small town with 731 inhabitants located 18 kilometers east of Turin, in Piedmont. The name of this place derives from Latin, indeed "mon: alto" means "high mountain".
History: How Montaldo Torinese was born
The first evidence of Montaldo Torinese dates back to 1159, thanks to a diploma of Frederick Barbarossa. In this document, Montaldo is assigned in feudal tenure to the Church of Turin with the name of "Curtem de monte alto". In 1394 the town was devastated by Facino Cane, a condottiero. Subsequently, the municipality passed to the Simone Balbo family, then to the Ferrero di Ormea and the Cassuli di Carmagnola.
Buildings and Places of Interest
The Castle
One of the most iconic places of interest in Montaldo Torinese is the castle located on top of the hill. It is a building of ancient origins that has undergone various transformations. In 1187 the castle was mentioned in a document where the Bishop of Turin invested some prerogatives to some local lords provided that they had surrounded at least half of the castle with walls. It is an important act because this document defines norms of civil law. After years of abandonment, today the castle has become a luxury hotel.
The Parish of Saints Vittore and Corona
The Parish of Saints Vittore and Corona is another attraction in Montaldo Torinese. The church dates back to the eighteenth century and is described as a single-naved construction with a semicircular apse and with the bell tower on the left. Around the church, there is the cemetery, and the church itself has been transformed into a cemetery chapel.
Economy of Montaldo Torinese
The hills of Montaldo Torinese are extremely fertile and are characterized by excellent productions of grapes and cereals.
