Montaldeo: A Municipality in Lower Piedmont

Hello friends! Today, I want to talk to you about Montaldeo, a municipality in Lower Piedmont located in the province of Alessandria. With its 244 inhabitants, Montaldeo is a small but charming village nestled in the hills of Monferrato, not far from the Ovada valleys.

History of Montaldeo

Montaldeo has an ancient and interesting history. In the past, it was known as "Mons Alpeo," as confirmed by documents dating back to the 10th century. At that time, the village was part of the Obertenga march and was donated to the Abbey of San Marziano di Tortona. Later, Montaldeo was a dominion of the Marquis of Gavi, until it was destroyed by the Genoese in 1224. It was rebuilt only in 1271 by the municipality of Alessandria and then came under the dominion of the Marquis of Monferrato.

In 1431, Francesco Sforza occupied Montaldeo and included it in his fortress of the Duchy of Milan. Later, the village was granted in fief to Gian Galeazzo Trotti. In 1528, the people rebelled against the abuses of the feudal lord Cristoforo Trotti, and Montaldeo became part of the Genoese dominion from 1528 to 1530. Finally, in 1531, the dominion passed to the Doria family, whose descendants still hold the title of Marquis to this day.
