The castle was on the Via Francigena and over the years became an important outlet and crossroads towards the Val d'Arbia, the Val d'Orcia, the Val di Chiana, and the Amiata area. However, due to its strategic location, it was often ransacked by passing armies, and in 1295, the government of Siena had to intervene to resolve the disputes between Torrenieri and Montalcino. During the Middle Ages, the castle was burned several times, for example, by the Orvietans in 1235 and by the armies of Uguccione della Faggiola in 1316. Despite these events, Torrenieri continued to thrive, so much so that in 1208 it was one of the castles subject to Siena that had to pay the highest extraordinary taxes, amounting to L. 50.
