Discovering Sant'Angelo in Colle

Hello everyone! Today I will tell you about a beautiful hamlet of the Municipality of Montalcino, in the province of Siena, in Tuscany: Sant'Angelo in Colle.

Physical geography

Sant'Angelo in Colle is a small medieval village perched on a hill about 8 km from Montalcino. The panoramic view from the village walls is breathtaking and embraces a vast expanse of vineyards that produce one of the best Italian wines: the Brunello di Montalcino.

Let's discover Sant'Angelo in Colle: history, monuments, and the Brunello di Montalcino.

History

Although there is no precise information about the birth of the town, it is believed to have already existed in 715. In 1225, the Counts of the castle of Sant'Angelo swore allegiance to the Republic of Siena, which used these castles as defense against possible attacks. In 1281, the village fell into the hands of Armaleo and Gualchino, who rebelled against Sienese rule. However, the Sienese Republic managed to reconquer it, ordering the destruction of the walls as "punishment for accepting the enemies in the castle." Nevertheless, the Republic decided to rebuild them the following year together with the cassero, which has since been known as "Palazzaccio." Sant'Angelo became part of the Diocese of Montepulciano and Chiusi-Pienza in 1462 thanks to the establishment of Pio II.

Monuments and places of interest

Sant'Angelo in Colle boasts wonderful monuments and churches. Among these, stands out the Pieve di San Michele Arcangelo, the Church of Madonna della Misericordia and the Church of San Pietro. Finally, we cannot fail to mention the clock inside the Palazzaccio which still works perfectly.
