Montabone

Montabone: a brief historical excursion

Montabone is a charming town located in the province of Asti, in the heart of the Piedmont region. Its history began in the 11th century when it was under the control of the diocese of Acqui. In 1164, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa enfeoffed it and delivered it to the Marchesato del Monferrato. During the Paleologi dynasty, the village came under the Savoy control because Amedeo VIII of Savoy defeated Gian Giacomo Paleologo to stop the expansionist ambitions of Monferrato. Montabone then passed to the Della Rovere-Bistagno and Caccia families, originating from Acqui Terme.

The famous painter of the 17th century Guglielmo Caccia, known as "il Moncalvo," is native of Montabone. The Cazzola family has provided the municipality with some of its lords. The coat of arms of the municipality of Montabone was granted, together with the municipal banner, in 1961.

Conclusions

Montabone is a small town that reveals all its beauty in every detail. History, art, and culture blend harmoniously in this picturesque municipality of Piedmont. However, the decrease in the number of inhabitants has not undermined the beauty and importance of this place, which is still a gem to discover and admire.
