Physical geography

The old village of Monleale is situated on top of a hill that reaches 320 meters above sea level and offers an incredible panoramic view of the surroundings. Other hills extend to the south, such as Mount Lanate and Mount Cenelli, which can be the destination of hikes and walks.

The main center, with the municipal headquarters, is instead located at the bottom of the valley, on the bank of the Curone river.

Monleale: history, tradition and panoramic view.

Origin of the name

The name Monleale could derive from the noun 'mount' followed by the personal name 'Leale', from which the surname 'Leali' originated. Alternatively, it may refer to the "mountain of the law", attesting to the exercise of justice with the related death sentences executed there.

History

Monleale has a long history. In 1172, a castle with moats and three towers was built on the hill, later ceded to the bishops of Tortona. In 1403, the castle becomes the property of Perino da Tortona, who keeps it until 1727, followed by the Calcamuggi of Alessandria. The castle will be destroyed by a fire set by the inhabitants of the neighboring Volpedo, led by the marchese Bernabò Malaspina, a Guelf partisan. The castle will never be rebuilt.

In 1885, the current road between Monleale and Castellar Guidobono was built, on which the Tortona-Monleale Tramway would run between 1889 and 1933. During this period, the bridge with Volpedo was also built. These works favored the settlement of houses along the left bank of the Curone, giving rise to what would become Monleale basso.

Monuments and places of interest

One of the most important places of interest in Monleale is the ancient “Oratory of the Blessed Virgin of the Gonfalone”, located on the top of the hill of the old village.
