History
Origin
The territory on which Tesido now stands was already inhabited in ancient times, before the arrival of the Romans. Archaeologists who conducted excavations in the area are well aware of this. The first official document mentioning Tesido dates back to 769, when the Bavarian monarch Tassilo III of Bavaria donated some lands to the Scharnitz monastery near Mittenwald. Tesido, in this case, was the name of the stream that flows through the village.
Around the 10th and 11th centuries, Monguelfo-Tesido became a destination for many families who came to settle here. The most important century for the medieval history of Tesido was the 12th century, when the rise of the Welsperg began. The current Parish Church of Tesido, dedicated to the saints Ingenuin of Sabiona and Albuin; the Church of San Giorgio, on the other hand, is older.
The lords von Welsperg, vassals of Gorizia, began the construction of their castle, Castello di Monguelfo, and another defensive building on a wooded hill opposite their dwelling, which from the fourteenth century is known as Castel Thurn. The castle of Tesido guaranteed prompt defense both for the village of Tesido and for a possible attack on the lords' dwelling. Castel Thurn (now in ruins) was composed only of a tower that served as a lookout tower, but was ceded to the Füllein family, related to the Welsperg, who reacquired it in 1359.
