San Saturnino
San Saturnino: the hidden treasure on the Ligurian road
If you are looking for a hidden treasure on the Ligurian road, then San Saturnino might be the right place for you. This hamlet of the municipality of Moneglia, located just over two kilometers from the main village, offers an ancient and interesting history, a current population of around 96 inhabitants, and some curiosity along its provincial road 55.
History
San Saturnino is mentioned in the Constitution project of the Ligurian Republic of 1797, as a territory separated from Moneglia and then included in the Gromolo district with Sestri Levante as the canton chief. In the nineteenth century, there was a small slate quarry in the territory of San Saturnino. But a more recent event was the earthquake of October 20, 2011, which caused the bronze cross of the church bell tower to fall from over 30 meters high.
Population
The village had a much higher population in the past. In 1845, the parish of San Saturnino counted 440 people. The population then decreased to 94 at the beginning of the 21st century, in line with the mountain hamlets of Ligurian villages.
Prominent figures
The village can boast among its natives Luigi Burgo, founder of Cartiere Burgo and Senator of the Kingdom of Italy. Burgo built the school and the nursery, the aqueduct, and the church square. It is also the birthplace of the naturalist Florentino Ameghino, born here in 1853. His family immediately emigrated to Argentina, where Ameghino became one of the greatest scholars of South American prehistoric fauna.

If you are looking for a day trip outside Moneglia and its surroundings, San Saturnino offers a good alternative to the usual tourist routes.
