The history of Monclassico

The village is mentioned for the first time in historical documents from 1178. However, an interesting story concerns the figure of Don Cornelio Sicher, born in 1900 in Coredo, parish priest in Monclassico from 1942 to 1970. Don Sicher had a connection with the German admiral Wilhelm Canaris during World War I. Canaris was the commander of the Abwehr, the German military intelligence service, but when Adolf Hitler seized power, Canaris opposed his ideas and participated in the attempt on Hitler's life in 1944, being executed that year. In 1943, during a meeting with Don Sicher, Canaris confided in him that he had prepared an escape route to Patagonia. Don Sicher, however, died in 1995 without ever embarking on this journey.
