History
The Via Francigena del Moncenisio
Moncenisio has a long and fascinating history linked to its role as a passageway on the Via Francigena del Moncenisio. This ancient route, which was part of a network of roads that crossed Europe, was used by pilgrims to reach Rome and Jerusalem. In the sixteenth century, the Via Francigena del Moncenisio became a primary route for trade relations between Italy and France. The travelers' route provided for the disassembly of carriages in Novalesa, in order to continue the journey along the steep mule track that, through Ferrera, led to the pass; from here, one could then descend towards Lanslebourg-Mont-Cenis, beyond the Alps.
The foundation of Ferrera Cenisio
The foundation of Moncenisio, then called Ferrera Cenisio, is linked to the history of transit through the pass. However, recent studies have shown that the village originated as a mining town in the area. In 1224, some citizens of Val di Susa and Maurienne agreed with the Novalesa abbey, the owner of the area, for the cultivation of mines, also with the help of workers from the Province of Bergamo. During the fourteenth century, the progressive depletion of iron mines led to the conversion of the village into a place for hospitality on the Via Francigena del Moncenisio. This is also attested to by the surveys that describe the arcaded houses.
Moncenisio's recent history
Until the Second World War, Moncenisio was called Ferrera Cenisio. The name was changed in 1940, in response to the French, when the municipal headquarters were moved to the pass by the fascist podestà of the time.
