The province of Asti: a brief history

The province of Asti has a long and interesting history dating back to the Royal Letters Patent of SAR Carlo Emanuele I on November 22, 1620, when the province was composed of 42 municipalities. Over the centuries, the province expanded and changed several times, passing under French rule before returning to the House of Savoy. In 1859, the province of Asti was suppressed and replaced by the district of Asti, which included the same municipalities. However, in 1935, the province of Asti was reconstituted with Asti as its capital and a district composed of 105 municipalities.

From floods to the present day

Despite its ancient and eventful history, the province of Asti has also faced some more recent problems. The province has suffered heavy damages due to the floods of 1948, 1968 and the Tanaro river in 1994, which also caused fatalities. However, the province has continued to grow and prosper in the following years.

In the years 1947-1949, the province also recognized the dignity of autonomous bodies to a series of municipalities, which during the Fascist period had been aggregated to more significant municipal realities. The province was thus formed by 120 municipalities, for the re-establishment of the following: Azzano d'Asti, Cantarana, Capriglio, Castellero, Cerreto d'Asti, Loazzolo, Colcavagno (one of the three municipalities that will later form Montiglio Monferrato in 1998), Corsione, Cortandone, Maretto, Moasca, Moransengo, Pino d'Asti, Roatto and Tonengo.

Today, the province of Asti is known for its natural beauty, wine and gastronomy, as well as its rich and varied history. The province welcomes many visitors every year, who come to discover its natural, historical and culinary treasures.

In summary, the province of Asti is a very special province, with a rich and interesting history and a unique geographical location.
