Mompeo: a corner of paradise between nature and history.

The history of Mompeo

The territory of Mompeo was inhabited by the Sabines, an ancient population of the area, who later joined the Romans forming a single people. In the area, there are also ancient Roman dwellings, including a villa that would have belonged to Fabius Maximus. However, local tradition has it that the villa of Gnaeus Pompey was located precisely in the locality of Palombara, in the municipality of Mompeo.

The Romans chose this area for its proximity to Rome, healthy climate, fertile soil, and abundant waters. The land on which Mompeo stands also reminded them of the ancient Regillo, the Sabine city that was the homeland of Attus Clausus.

After the imperial age, Mompeo appears in the documents of 817, where it is mentioned as "Fundum Pompeianum", that is, as part of the territory of the Benedictine abbey. In 875, Abbot Giovanni conferred the feudal investiture of his domains on Francone, who built his fortress on a hill, that is, the current area of the historic center.

What to see in Mompeo

Mompeo is a small village where you can spend pleasant days discovering the treasures that this territory offers. First of all, there are the ancient walls that surround the historic center. It is a massive construction of imposing dimensions and a particular architecture that refers to past centuries.

The civic tower is another point of reference for the village, considered a symbol of the power of the feudal lords of Mompeo. The tower, 26 meters high, is built of local stone and was erected to protect the territory from Saracen incursions.

Another very interesting place to visit in Mompeo is the church of Santa Maria Assunta. It is an imposing religious building, built in Romanesque style and consolidated later with Gothic elements. Next to the church stands the bell tower, which stands out for its sturdy and slightly inclined structure.

Typical dishes of Mompeo

The local cuisine of Mompeo offers a wide variety of dishes typical of the Sabine tradition, such as carbonara pasta, amatriciana pasta, Roman-style tripe, and pork roast. Among the local sweets, the San Giuseppe donut represents a must for the most gourmet palates.

In conclusion, Mompeo represents an ideal destination for those looking for a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, where they can admire the beauty of nature and discover the millennial history of the area. Come and discover this little corner of paradise in the heart of Sabina!
