History

The Sanctuary of San Gottardo in Pozzengo is one of the most important monuments in Mombello Monferrato. The church of Gottardo di Hildesheim in Pozzengo was wanted by Monferrina religious devotion, in the full climate of the Counter-Reformation. The oratory appears for the first time as a document in the request sent on March 21, 1692 by the prior Lodovico Mombellardo to the bishop of Casale Monferrato to transform the chapel of San Gottardo into a country church, suitable for the celebration of the Holy Mass. Inside the church, the large statue of "San Gottardo", which has taken the place of a seventeenth-century painting, dominates the presbytery, while the numerous votive images fixed to the walls represent the sign of popular gratitude for the granted graces.
