Greetings

Hi friends! Today I will talk to you about the province of Reggio Calabria, now replaced by the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria.

The province of Reggio Calabria: between mountains and sea.

Physical Geography

Territory

The province of Reggio Calabria extended from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Ionian Sea and contained the southernmost point of Italy. The territory was mainly mountainous and covered by the Aspromonte, with the only exception of the plain called "a chjàna" in the south, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was the smallest province in Calabria, but contained 97 municipalities and occupied 21.1% of the regional territory.

Districts

Between 1998 and 2010, the province used three districts for its administration: the Strait District, the Palmi District and the Locri District. These districts covered the metropolitan area of Reggio Calabria, the Gioia Tauro Plain and the Ionic area to the south.

Municipalities

There were 97 municipalities that were part of the province of Reggio Calabria. Among these, historic locations such as Gerace and Locri, the coastal towns of Palmi and Bagnara, and the largest and most well-known city, Reggio Calabria, stand out.

History

The province of Reggio Calabria was established in 1817 when Calabria Ulteriore Prima was divided into Ulteriore I and Ulteriore II. The territory of the province followed that of the ancient province of Calabria Ulteriore Prima. However, in 2017 it was replaced by the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria.

And here ends my summary of the brief history of the province of Reggio Calabria. I hope you can visit these wonderful places one day because Calabria is a unique and beautiful region in Italy!
