But Cascio's uniqueness is not limited to its population. The historic center of this hamlet is surrounded by fortified walls, built following the numerous wars that affected Garfagnana in the early seventeenth century.

One of the most important wars that affected Cascio was that of 1603, when the town was conquered by Lucca. Subsequently, when Cascio returned under the rule of the Estensi family, the walls that still surround the historic center were built. The work was carried out by the engineer Pasio Pasi and forms an irregular quadrilateral about 435 meters long.
