Campocroce

Campocroce: a hamlet of the municipality of Mogliano Veneto

If you're in search of a quiet place surrounded by nature, Campocroce could be just what you're looking for. It's a hamlet of Mogliano Veneto, located northwest of the historic center.

Campocroce's territory is extensive and includes several rural locations distant from the main settlement, such as Busa, Malcanton, Loreto, and Selve. If you have a passion for bodies of water, you'll find what you're looking for here: in fact, there are the Zermanson, Zero, and Fossa Storta rivers in the hamlet's territory, as well as numerous drainage canals.

But where does the name Campocroce come from? It is a compound of two words, "campo" and "croce", but the precise origin of the toponym is unknown. It is hypothesized that it may refer to a cross erected in a field for devotional or sad reasons.

History of Campocroce

Like many locations in Veneto, Campocroce has an ancient and interesting history. Unfortunately, few elements of this past remain.

Among the most notable civil architectures is the Motta silk factory built in 1876 and now restored. The structure, located in Campocroce's territory, is interesting mainly because it represents an example of industrial archaeology. Founded by engineer Pietro Motta, it was one of the most important silk factories in the area.

Monuments and points of interest in Campocroce

In addition to the Motta silk factory, Campocroce has several other places of interest. Among the religious architectures, for example, is the church of San Teonisto and Compagni Martiri, a parish that depends on the diocese of Treviso.

Several votive chapels scattered throughout the surrounding countryside also deserve a mention, such as the chapel of the Madonna del Carmine. Built in the eighteenth century, it is located near Via Zero Branco.

But Campocroce also offers much from the point of view of civil monuments. For example, along Via Chiesa Campocroce, there is Casa Calzavara, an ancient rustic property of the Mogliano Abbey. Here it's possible to admire the remains of frescoes dating back to the fifteenth century, depicting Christ, Santa Lucia, and other saints.

Villa Motta Cordova is also worth mentioning. It's located behind the parish church and is the residence of the Motta family, owners of the silk factory. The complex consists of three buildings immersed in a park: the manor house, a dovecote tower, and an annex. The manor house dates back to the eighteenth century and is characterized by a simple yet elegant facade, with four pseudo-pilasters that run through the entire height.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Campocroce is a place to visit if you're looking for a quiet place surrounded by nature. Here you can admire interesting monuments from a historical and architectural perspective, but also enjoy the beauty of the rivers that run through the hamlet.
