Mogliano
Discover Mogliano: an ancient Marche village
Hello friends, today I want to tell you about a splendid Italian municipality located in the province of Macerata, in the Marche region: Mogliano. This ancient village is located on a hill and is exactly halfway between the Sibillini Mountains and the Adriatic Sea, in a strategic and panoramic location that makes it even more fascinating.
The history of Mogliano
The territory of Mogliano dates back to the 7th-6th century BC, as evidenced by the discovery of a sandstone stele with a medio-Adriatic inscription, preserved in the National Museum of Ancona. Initially inhabited by the Picene people, Mogliano was then influenced by Roman culture when Rome subjugated the Piceno in the early decades of the 3rd century BC.
Between the 12th and 14th centuries, the castle of Mogliano was ruled by the "da Mogliano" family, among whom stands out Gentile da Mogliano, who in 1345 became lord of Fermo and ruled the city until 1355, when he was defeated by the arms of Egidio Albornoz. With the Albornozian institutional reform of 1357, Mogliano was included in the district of Fermo, of which it was one of the major castles. Over the centuries, Mogliano then passed under the rule of Fermo, was declared a City with a diploma from the Queen of Hungary in 1744, and included in the Tronto Department during the Napoleonic era.
In 1860, the people of Mogliano gave their generous contribution to the liberation war, with many rushing to enlist in the 1st Battalion Company of the "Cacciatori delle Marche,” commanded by a Moglianese officer, Captain Cesare Latini. After the annexation of the Marche to the Kingdom of Italy, the municipality of Mogliano remained in the province of Macerata.
The symbols of Mogliano
The coat of arms of the municipality of Mogliano was granted by decree of the President of the Republic on March 7, 2005, while the gonfalone is a yellow and red truncated flag.
Monuments and places of interest
Mogliano is rich in monuments and places of interest worth visiting. One of the most important is the Church of Santa Maria in Piazza, which houses the "Altarpiece by Lorenzo Lotto" - "The Madonna in Glory and Saints Giovanni Battista, Antonio da Padova, Maria Maddalena and Giuseppe". This work was commissioned in 1547 by the mayor of Mogliano, Jacomo Boninfante, for the price of 130 gold scudi.
But it is not the only artistic treasure present in the municipality of Mogliano. There are also the Church of Santissimo Crocifisso, the Fontana Grande, the Palazzo Comunale, the Torre Civica, the Oratory of Pietrarossa, and the Church of San Francesco.
The surrounding nature
Mogliano is in a strategic position also from a naturalistic point of view, between the Adriatic Sea and the Sibillini Mountains. Not far from the center of the municipality is the Sibillini Regional Park, one of the most important natural areas in the Marche region, which we suggest visiting if you are nature and trekking enthusiasts.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the municipality of Mogliano is a hidden gem between the mountains and the sea, which is worth discovering and visiting. A destination suitable for those who love art, history, and nature, in an ancient village full of charm. What are you waiting for? Plan your visit to Mogliano!
