Moggio
Welcome to Moggio, the Wonder Village
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Moggio, a small town in the province of Lecco, in Lombardy. With only 467 inhabitants, this village is located in the Valsassina plateau, at 890m above sea level. Read my post to discover everything Moggio has to offer!
The geographical location
Moggio is considered the highest municipality in Valsassina, and is located in a dominant position over the valley. It is the last village on the provincial road 64 in the province of Lecco before the San Pietro Summit pass. This pass leads to the adjacent Val Taleggio, where you can find culinary delights such as cheese and honey.
The history of the municipality
The banner of the municipality of Moggio is a white drape. The coat of arms was granted by decree of the President of the Republic in January 1999. The village dates back to 1566, when the church of San Francesco d'Assisi was declared parish. In the 17th century, the Combi family built the Oratory of San Bartolomeo, which is still standing.
Places to visit
The church of San Francesco d'Assisi was rebuilt in the 18th century and contains frescoes and a 1913 Rossi organ. The Oratory of San Bartolomeo, built in the 17th century by the Combi family, is another attraction of this village. Inside, it houses a marble altar dating back to 1873 and a painting by Carlo Panceri depicting the martyrdom of the saint. The Moggio Museum House is a must-see for history and culture lovers.
The society of Moggio
The population of Moggio has increased over the years. In 1771, there were 244 inhabitants. In 1951, there were only 300 people. In the summer, the village welcomes an average of 2,000 people. The village has a strong tourist economy, although there is no industry. During World War II, the Germans blew up the mine in the woods above the village, as they thought it was a refuge used by the partisans.
The administration of the municipality
Moggio is part of the Mountain Community of Valsassina and is twinned with some foreign cities.
Sports in Moggio
The Moggio Sports Centre allows residents to engage in outdoor activities and organises activities for children and adults.
