Forno
Discover Forno, a suburb of Moena
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Forno, a suburb of Moena located in the high Val di Fiemme in the province of Trento. If you find yourself in this area, I recommend a visit to this small yet characterful village.
Geography and environment
Forno is located on the right bank of the Avisio river and is crossed by the Valsorda stream, one of its tributaries. The village is surrounded by nature and overlooked to the north by the small suburb of Medil and to the west by the Regola Feudale forest. It is located at the 43rd km of the 48 Dolomites state road, halfway between the towns of Predazzo and Moena and is 76 km from Trento and 19 km from Cavalese. Forno is located at an altitude of 1,165 meters above sea level, at the entrance to the wild Valsorda which gives access to the mountain range of Latemar.
History
Forno historically belongs to the Magnificent Community of Fiemme and geographically to the Val di Fiemme, whose "historic" boundary corresponds to a stream between the towns of Soraga and Moena. Forno has undergone a strong demographic decrease over the years. Until 1928, the community was autonomous and included the upper suburb of Medil. Starting from that year, both towns were annexed to the community of the nearby town of Moena.
Origins
The first documented trace of a settlement in the village dates back to the eleventh century. The name of the village, Forno, derives from the Latin "Furnus", given the industrial activity of processing a particular rock extracted from the nearby mountain group of Latemar, the so-called "Bol Ross". From this rock, a red paint was extracted and used as a protective coating on metal parts, mainly roofs of houses and churches. Even today, traces and sketches can be found on some rocks between the village and Medil.
Forno today
The village is still alive thanks to the presence of several commercial activities, including a bar and a bakery. Furthermore, Forno is an ideal stop for those who love hiking, walking and outdoor activities. Here is the entrance to the wild Val Valsorda, from which you can admire the spectacular view of the Latemar mountain range. Forno is therefore a perfect starting point for those who want to venture into this wonderful natural environment.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a less crowded destination, where you can admire unspoilt nature and spend moments of relaxation and tranquillity, Forno is the ideal choice. And who knows, you might even be fascinated by its colours and history, as I was!
