Moena

Welcome to Moena!

Hello everyone! Today I will tell you about a small town located in the autonomous province of Trento, nestled between the enchanting valleys of Fiemme and Fassa. I'm talking about Moena, a place that will leave you breathless for its beauty and its history. Are you ready to accompany me on this journey?

Physical Geography

Moena is surrounded by the magnificent Dolomites, at an altitude ranging from 1,094 to 2,823 meters above sea level. The town is surrounded by the mountains of the imposing Latemar Group, the Catinaccio Group, the Marmolada, and the Cima Bocche. The geographical position of Moena makes it one of the most suggestive places in Italy.

The municipality of Moena includes the entire Avisio basin, up to the narrow valley between Forno di Fiemme and Mezzavalle. The upper part of the Costalongia valley and much of the right bank of the Valsorda do not belong to the Moena territory, while the wide area of Lusia-Bocche, in Val Travignolo, is part of it. In the basin of the village, there is a wide area where we find the hamlets of Someda (to the east), Sorte (Moena)-Sort (to the west), and Pezzé-Pecé (to the north). More isolated and higher up we find Penia (Moena), a magical and enchanted place that leads you to the slopes of the Latemar.

Moena: between history and nature in the Dolomites

Origins of the name

The toponym of this place derives from the word ''moena'' or ''molena'' present in the Venetian and Ladin dialects, equivalent to the Italian ''mollica'' (breadcrumb). The term is derived from the Latin "mollis," meaning "soft," and indicates soft or marshy ground. This explanation helps us understand how the Moena territory was originally a marshy area.

History

The history of Moena dates back to 1164, when the church of San Vigilio was consecrated by the ecclesiastical principality of Trento Adelpreto II. The town has belonged since 1318 to the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, within the Episcopal Principality of Trento and the German Confederation. No source has ever confirmed the theory that the town belonged to the episcopal principality of Bressanone before.

Over the centuries, the town has undergone important transformations, from the reclamation works of the area to the construction of new churches and the realization of new roads. Starting from the 1900s, Moena has witnessed significant development, becoming one of the best-known holiday destinations in northern Italy. Today, Moena represents one of the most beautiful and suggestive places in the Val di Fassa and Trentino-Alto Adige.

Conclusions

When we think of the beauty of the Dolomites, Moena is undoubtedly one of the most exciting places to visit. Located between the Fiemme and Fassa valleys, this town is characterized by unspoiled nature and a millenary history. Mountain, skiing, and trekking enthusiasts cannot fail to visit this place full of charm and tradition. All that remains is to visit Moena and discover all its wonders firsthand!
